The Long Range Traverse in Gros Morne Nfld , The Inca Trail in Peru, The Tobeatic Traverse in Nova Scotia , The Wonderstrand in Labrador. The four best hikes in nearly forty years of backpacking and hiking together. We made arrangements with Experience Labrador to be dropped off at West Bay at the north end of this sixty some kilometre sand beach. For the next six days weshared this area with Black Bears , Caribou , Wolves , Seals and countless bird life.

Each night we camped close to the beach with the sounds of the ocean in our ears. During the day we hiked along the beach marvelling at the giant iceberg just offshore. We often stopped just to enjoy the spectacular views and perhaps wait for a Black Bear and her cubs to move off the beach so we could carry on. One day we watched two Caribou swim to a small island just off the beach. In the evenings we would often build a small camp fire on the beach , perhaps to cook up a feed of Sea Trout just caught at the mouth of a small stream. One memorable evening we watched thousands of Scoters rafted up in our bay for the night.

This is truly a wilderness area. We saw no other people, not even a boat off shore. Soon to become part of the Mealy Mountains National Park this area provides the opportunity to hike through some of the wildest part of North America. The Barretts had us picked up at North River on day six for our return to Cartwright

Pete, Tom and George,

Our kayak tour with Experience Labrador was one of our favourite trips together. And the trout we caught in our camp on North River, that Pete cooked for us on the beach, was definitely the best fish we've ever eaten.

What a beautiful website - love the pictures. And from one who experienced your product first hand, "second to none" - fantastic experience! Cannot put into words, must be experienced to truely understand the value!

In August, 2004, my family and I embarked on a four day, 45 km walk on the Wonder Strand on the coast of Labrador north of Cartwright. This is an area of interest to archaeologists studying early Viking landings in North America and it is a skidoo travel corridor for south coast Labrador residents in winter but, apart from the odd boat passing by off shore, we did not encounter any other people.

The walk began at Fish Cove Point, about 55 km north of Cartwright and finished at North River, across Sandwich Bay from Cartwright, and was a combination of beach walking and hiking crossing headlands, all easily manageable by our group which ranged in age from 12 to a very fit 74 years. Campsite options were plentiful and appealing beside fresh water streams with great ocean views and wildlife viewing (black bear, caribou, porcupine, otters, whales, seals and a variety of seabirds) added to the enjoyment.

Plentiful bakeapples and blueberries on the headlands were an added bonus. The jumping off point for the trip is Cartwright which is accessible by ferry from Goose Bay, Labrador or Lewisporte, Newfoundland, by road from Newfoundland and by scheduled twin otter air service from Goose Bay. Experience Labrador Tours is based in Cartwright and offers a full range of services to rospective hikers. Peyton, George and Tom Barrett are friendly, knowledgeable and safety conscious and they provided top quality service for our trip, ranging from pick-up at the airport in Cartwright, through boat travel to the starting point, boat pick-up at the finish point and delivery to the ferry. They acted as an emergency contact for the duration of our trip and they were very responsive and accommodating to our needs and last minute changes in plan.

I just wanted to say again how much fun I had on our trip. I got more than I dreamed of – whales, icebergs, inukshuks, great company, the incredible beauty and silence of Labrador, seals, flummies, the best bath water ever (in Tom`s cabin), humpbacks breeching, great food, a comfortable welcoming atmosphere, a taste of a culture + way of life that`s different than the one I grew up in, paddling in 4 metre swells (I know Tom, they weren`t waves!). I`ve already told lots of people what a wonderful time I had. I`ll keep telling more Pete!
